Living Our Philosophy

At Stepping Stones Early Learning Centres, we believe that our philosophy is the heart of everything we do. It guides our daily practices, shapes our interactions with children, families, and educators, and informs the experiences we create within our service. Over the years, our philosophy has continuously evolved, adapting to the ever-changing needs and values of the children, families, and educators we serve.

In this post, we’ll share how our philosophy shapes our everyday experiences, how we ensure families are kept informed, and how we continually reflect and adjust to stay aligned with the values that matter most to everyone in our community.

A Living Philosophy: Adapting to the Needs of Our Community

Our philosophy is not a static document, but rather a living, breathing entity that evolves to meet the needs of our children, families, and educators. As these needs shift and grow, so too does our understanding of how best to support the children in our care.

At Stepping Stones, we work hard to ensure that our philosophy reflects the values and priorities of our community. Whether it’s a shift in pedagogical approaches or a response to feedback from families, our philosophy is always evolving to stay relevant and impactful.

Key Practices Guided by Our Philosophy

We have a number of key practices at Stepping Stones that ensure our daily experiences are aligned with our philosophy. From curriculum design to interactions with children, every aspect of our service is guided by our core values and beliefs. Our educators take a holistic approach to the care and education of each child, focusing on individual needs, respectful relationships, and collaborative learning. This philosophy is deeply embedded in everything we do, from the way we plan our programs to the way we engage with families and the wider community.

Keeping Families Informed: Transparent Communication

We believe that an informed community is an empowered one, and we work hard to ensure that families are always in the loop when it comes to our philosophy and its implementation.

Families are kept informed of our evolving philosophy through a variety of communication channels, including:

  • Newsletters – Regularly updated with the latest philosophy highlights and changes, helping families stay connected to the values that guide our service.
  • Posts & Handbooks – Clear, accessible information about our philosophy is shared through posts, handbooks, and updates on our Stepping Stones app, so families can easily access and understand our core beliefs and practices.
  • Social Media – We connect with families through our social media channels, sharing insights and reflections on how our philosophy is being put into action in our day-to-day activities.

By keeping families engaged and informed, we ensure they have a deeper understanding of how our philosophy shapes their child’s experiences at Stepping Stones.

Reflecting on Our Philosophy: A Continuous Process

A key element of our commitment to living our philosophy is our ongoing process of reflection. We understand that our community is dynamic, and as such, we need to reflect regularly on our practices to ensure our philosophy stays aligned with the evolving needs of the children, families, and educators.

We engage in multiple avenues for reflection:

  • Feedback from stakeholders: We actively seek input from all those involved in our service—children, families, and educators—through surveys, forms, meetings, and informal conversations. This feedback is invaluable in helping us adjust and refine our philosophy to better meet the needs of everyone involved.
  • Reflective circles and staff meetings: Educators come together regularly to reflect on our philosophy and how it translates into action within the service. These reflective circles provide a space for deep conversations about our practices and how we can improve.

This ongoing process of reflection has led us to add new elements to our philosophy, ensuring it stays fresh and relevant. It’s also allowed us to revisit and pull back certain aspects that no longer align with our current practices or with the needs of our children and families.

Philosophy in Action: Bringing Our Beliefs to Life

One of the ways we ensure our philosophy is actively integrated into our service is through our Philosophy in Action Wall. Located in each of our services, this wall breaks down the key elements of our philosophy and showcases how they are being implemented in practice.

At staff meetings, Quality Improvement Plan (QIP) meetings, and family communication sessions, we identify and discuss how each aspect of our philosophy is being lived day-to-day. We also add evidence to the frames on the wall—whether it’s through observations of children’s learning, photos of activities, or feedback from families and staff—demonstrating how the philosophy is embodied in everyday experiences.

This visual representation serves as a constant reminder to everyone involved of the importance of our philosophy and our collective responsibility to live it out consistently.

Keeping Families Engaged and Informed

We understand that families play a critical role in supporting and reinforcing our philosophy at home. That’s why we make an effort to share philosophy highlights regularly through our newsletters, social media posts, and other communication channels. By keeping families informed about our evolving philosophy, we help them understand how our practices are directly supporting their child’s development and wellbeing.

These updates also allow families to reflect on how the values and principles we uphold in the centre align with their own beliefs and parenting approaches, fostering a strong partnership between educators and families.

A Fluid Philosophy: Responding to Change

We believe that our philosophy should be fluid and adaptable—responsive to the changing needs of the families we serve and the evolving pedagogical practices that are important to our educators. As Stepping Stones continues to grow and change, so too will our philosophy, ensuring that we remain aligned with the latest research, best practices, and the values that matter most to our community.

By embracing this fluidity, we ensure that our philosophy is not only reflective of where we are today, but also where we want to go in the future. It is an ongoing journey, and we are committed to walking it together with our children, families, and educators.
